When Keeping Hope Alive volunteers work together to help a family, we create more than just clean spaces - we create lasting memories and bonds.
Recently, we helped 're-decorate' for a family of seven living in a two-room rental flat. Their home faced serious maintenance issues - a flooded kitchen, malfunctioning toilet facilities, and a non-working rubbish chute. These conditions posed safety risks, especially concerning for the young children. The place needed significant work, but seeing everyone pitch in - cleaning, organizing, and supporting each other - showed the power of community action.
We had a party organising the belongings of the family, while another does the cleaning. Our founder, Fion led a few volunteers to pick some storage solutions items sponsored by HOUZE for this family, giving them a chance to manage their limited space more efficiently. A few of us went to purchase some mattresses for the family as their old ones were damp from the water leakage from the kitchen.
Now, whenever we pass this block, we share a common memory of what we accomplished together. It feels like we fought a battle side by side, each person playing their part in transforming a home and bringing hope to a family.
These shared experiences bind us together and remind us why we do this work. Every volunteer's contribution matters, and yes, we should feel proud of making a difference in our community. This is what Keeping Hope Alive is about - not just serving, but growing together through service.
