"Babies are an alien species, they babble and twitch," my sons Harkman and Lockeman declared after helping to care for an infant while her mother was shopping at FairPrice.
It was just one of many heartwarming moments as my family volunteered with Keeping Hope Alive at a block at Teck Whye. Our group had more than 20 dedicated volunteers spanning all ages - from my son Feynman as the youngest to Uncle Ngiam as the eldest.
To start the day off right, I brought my three boys through a McDonald's drive-thru for some sausage wraps and hashbrowns. Fueled up, we joined the rest of the team to distribute essential goods like rice and electric fans (courtesy of our generous sponsors) door-to-door. We split up to 3 groups, one fixing the new fans at the void deck, one serving one block, and another serving another block further away.
As we knocked on each unit, we paid special attention to families with young children, assessing their needs. Once we connected with those households, we brought the whole family out for a shopping trip to NTUC, driving those with infants in need of strollers. We sponsored the families with 200 dollars worth of vouchers for each family.
And that's when all our kid volunteers really shone. They eagerly took the hands of toddlers and offered to hug the babies, allowing the parents a brief respite. Watching them focus so intently on playing with and caring for the little ones was incredibly heartwarming.
The kids' energy was absolutely contagious. Their bright smiles, laughter, and pure joy in simply being helpful added such a special touch to the whole experience. Moments like this reminded me of the positive impact we can have nurturing compassion in the next generation.
