The Art of Volunteering : "It’s your responsibility..."
14 Feb 2024

When I first joined KHA as a volunteer, I stumbled upon something quite enlightening. It was the manner in which Fion, Keeping Hope Alive's founder, interacted with the more experienced volunteers.

In various situations, Fion would gently prompt, “Can you see what you can do for her please?” At this, the seasoned volunteer would naturally take charge, often extending their help well beyond the planned weekend tasks.

For example, while our usual activities involved distributing rice and vitamins, our role was far from just delivery. We were encouraged to be perceptive and inquisitive – a bit "kaypoh", if you will. This helped us uncover hidden needs that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Consider the case of a resident with mobility issues. A volunteer would accompany him home, engaging in friendly conversation. During this visit, she might notice his uncomfortable sleeping conditions, like a mattress on the floor. Prompted by genuine concern, she'd enquire if he needed a better bed and mattress, considering her personal means to assist.

This level of initiative was not a directive from KHA; it was a reflection of the individual's commitment and resourcefulness. Financial support was not a given. If a volunteer chose to extend help, they might propose it to the group, but often, they relied on their personal resources.

This understanding between Fion and the volunteers was an unspoken yet deeply felt agreement. They knew the essence of their involvement. We are not an organisation, we are just a platform of volunteers coming together to serve the needy.

The beauty of being part of KHA lies in the belief that we are there as much to receive as to give. Our happiness and positive feelings stem from our actions, irrespective of their magnitude.

The joy we experience may vary with each gesture, influenced by individual circumstances, both of those we assist and of ourselves as volunteers.

This is the heart and soul of what KHA represents.
